I’ve read a lot of books. If you’re finding yourself here, I’m sure that you have to. In reading these many books, I’ve learned that not all books can be good ones. Or even decent ones at times. Unfortunately, for me, the first half of 2017 has been nothing but disappointing reads.
The Wangs vs. the World by Jade Chang
I met Jade Chang at Book Riot this past November. She was funny, relatable. As a result, I bought her book. If you haven’t heard about The Wangs vs. the World, it’s about a Chinese immigrant family that loses everything, and as a result, makes a cross country road trip to live with their prodigal daughter. It sounds like it would be a decent read, right? Sadly, no. While certain parts had me chuckling, reading The Wangs vs. the World was more of a chore than anything.
All the Ugly and Wonderful Things by Bryn Greenwood
Reading this book, and hating it, was entirely my fault. When I came across All the Ugly and Wonderful Things, I read the synopsis of the book as if a young woman found a mentor in life, one that was able to help her rise out of poverty, and leave her dysfunctional family. Holy hell, was I wrong. If you’re the type of person that can look past pedophilia and underage relationships, then this book may very well be for you. Otherwise? Keep walking.
Getting out of a Reading Rut
That’s what I call what I’m in. A reading rut. The problem is though – getting out of a reading rut. I’ve started a handful of books, but have yet to connect with one enough that I’m willing to finish. I’ll keep trucking along, flipping pages and whatnot. But, what about you? Most hated books? Most loved? What are you reading right now?
